Two important voting changes
by matt - October 1st, 2008
Based on the great feedback we’ve gotten from y’all since the latest round of changes went live, we’ve gone ahead and made two significant changes to the selection algorithm.
- We now treat votes for your own names differently then votes for others names. You can still vote for your own name, if it’s the best of the bunch. You can still win investment cash and gain experience. The big change is that we’ve added a little algoritmic magic to discount these votes to a degree we think will encourage choosing the best possible names. If you’re name’s the best, you shouldn’t get much penalty over-all (we didn’t want to take away your right to vote for the best name). If you vote for winning names, you’ll still receive the same great rewards. But be advised that votes in your own name aren’t going to be strictly equal to all votes anymore. The intent here is to encourage voting for what are the best names, regardless of the namer (even if its you).
- At project start, the client now has the ability to increase their influence vs. the community’s. Before the client was a voter/investor just like any community member. Now they can give themselves special weight. We hope this will let the client, if they so wish, steer rewards to the names they like the best. The community is always in the mix (even at the maximum client weight setting) and investing and naming rewards are the exact same as before (except the client can no longer win any reward if they exert this influence).
As always, Kluster is blessed to have an incredibly creative and intelligent community which inspires us to create the best product we can. Keep the suggestions coming, we’re listening.
With flowery dew drops of prancing love,

now that sounds like we are getting somewhere (though I always thought the client influence WAS more, interesting!)
*Off to ride the wild unicorn*
Wait so the client can vote only for names ?
off topic.
during the last payment round Ben said that the withdrawing of money will not be limited after a “couple of weeks” Its been 20 days.
If you are going to extend your original statement to occupy the full FOUR weeks, then will the 200 limit at least be lifted, or does the madness continue?
Just a quick question about the new points system. I just checked the Private Equity Investment Management Company Project. I voted for Bonsai (19%stake according to the page since I can’t see what I’ve voted for no more - it used to be at the watts section of the preferences page, but there’s only the watts conversion), but there’s no message about the points earned (if any) or the return of the “investment” or anything. Where do we check those things now?
Is there any return on investing on winning names?
Also, Some time ago there were some comments on doing a two-rounds voting system (so anyone could send names and afterwards we could all vote for the best) I just though it’d be a great idea to add to the new features because it would help saving time (not having to go back to the page at least twice for each project) and selecting the very best names, and not only the first ones (specially since now -30 votes limit- we have to substract votes from one of our selection if we want to vote one we didn’t choose before)
Good move, kluster team! I think this will give the client better results. Now just put back blind submissions and and the unicorns will be dancin’!
P.S. Now that we have that great new comment section, we could use our names there (and thus keep the social aspect going). The names should, imho, stand on their own.
Oh!!!! And color on the new questions and answers! YESSSSS!!!
Uh one last question, is stef still here ? xD
Just curious. Is it possible that all results of past projects (since the new system) changed because of your algorithm change? :p
See the Archive.
@martin they’re showing the wrong names based on the new algo, yeah … i’m gonan fix that today.
@matthew stef is definitely still here. also, the client can suggest names and vote on names like anyone else. if they decide to give themselves more influence, they become ineligible to win cash rewards.
@martin just to be clear, the the bug is in displaying the winning names. the new algorithm doesn’t mean we’re going back in time and changing winners.
@matthew oh, i’m still here (and check me out picking up their “@name” deal, which i wouldn’t have known).
i’m just knee deep in the hoopla - securing insurance…payroll…trying to understand what the hell these guys are talking about when it’s more about coding and less about lunch/music/politics/pop culture…planning drink-olympics with the company next door…you know, the real meat and potatoes.
(mmmm, meat and potatoes…now i’m hungry. and it’s only 10:52am.)
@drew - We are getting there, but are not ready to make any announcements yet.
@Ben
Thanks for the response. I look forward to that announcement.
@stef
your not making yourself felt here in the blog xDD at least for awhile
@matt
what about veto powers ? I think that could be a good idea, but they can only do it before the last 24 hours or something
FYI, yesterday when I said I fixed the display order of the previous projects to what it should be, I half did it. Today, I finished the job. Past winners on the archive and the projects pages are now all correct. Sorry for any confusion.
@matthew let’s see how the new admin influence works before making any more changes.
Why is namethis on a following frenzy on Twitter without first friending its own followers? Not that I care all that much but still. . . peculiar.
Would it be possible to indicate the level of influence a client has chosen for a project? Maybe only for logged in members or when the projects ended.
I browsed through the archives and saw that the votes ranged from 900-1200, which looks kinda high, but given that everyone is given 30 votes then the amount of people active in namethis is only around 30-40 people. which is not that much.
Yes I know that most of us hail from different countries and demographics, i still think it is too little.
Given that fact I think the main problem is that people don’t know what to do in the site, When a revamped namethis came online a lot of people i know started asking sometimes even calling me on how it works.
Can I suggest that we have a Faqs or how to page on namethis that can be seen like the one in knewsroom. that is short simple and sweet but still enough for a complete newbie to understand.
Secondly, in our referrals can we have a faqs or how to part as well, since the referral only leads to a fill in the blanks page so what happens is that people I send the referral code doesn’t know what they are getting into and therefore leaves.
Also on another note, do people who have private klusters get any kluster experience points as well ?
oh while I am at it,
https://coolidge.kluster.com
still exist
passcode = knewsroom
It is a knewsroom revival private kluster….
Btw is there a way for me to message all the members of my private kluster without starting a project ? and If possible can it appear on their dashboard or profile that there is a message for them ? so that I can get people back to the site.
Thanks
Okay, help me out here. I found a great name (I think it’s perfect) for the Beach Ratings website name. But a Google search shows it may already be a registered trademark (and in use by other groups as well, informally). The klusterbunch (I know it’s redundant, but that’s why I like it) seems to be split on the issue of “outing” other people’s names. I don’t like it myself. Then again, it’s not like we’re seeing a string of ringing endorsements in the comment section, either. How can we be relatively certain we’re recommending actually-available names to the client without hurting the sociability of the site?
Would we have a little guidance — even in the form of “wishes” — from the kluster team? (If wishes were horses…)
hmm maybe a search function ? for available websites, my style is to check up the domain itself and then if it gives me an error, Open-Dns or a godaddy.com i add that name.
BTW
I have invited a friend but she says that she gave me “watts” and on my account it hasn’t materialized yet unlike before.
I want the withdrawal limit lifted. This is getting absurd and really annoying.
This is my first time here so I will need a little help getting headed in the right direction…..passcode=tucker My only suggestion for the site is the ease of navigating just isn’t there, I would like to see more direct links to other areas of Kluster. I would appreciate everyone taking a look at my project.
http://mechanics.kluster.com/influence/projects/1053 Code = tucker I think this is what is needed for everyone to look at my project. I’m not sure but I’ll give it a try. Thanks
@Dave - I’m in agreement with you. @kluster team - please do the right thing and either eliminate the limit or write us checks for the full amount due. The next card load is quickly approaching…
I’ll jump on the bandwagon as well….Well I really really want to get this trendwatching report http://www.trendwatching.com/trendreport/content/ …..the early bird ends on November 17…I know the Kluster team is a cool bunch…I really really hope you can get it done by November 13 or 14 (3 days of waiting for the payoneer load) so that i can still get the trend report by November 17. Please guys
I may have missed this and am in a hurry this am trying to get kids off to school, but I am having a hard time voting for names. It is only letting me cast one vote and I have a couple names I like and would ad a few votes too, but when I go to another project then come back it has decreased the votes to 1 a piece. Has anyone had this same problem?
Well the problem seems to have fixed itself. Is there a maximum number of votes I can make on someones idea?
Same thing happened to me last night Billy… I thought it was just an ajax + browser thing going on…..I am pretty sure there is no maximum for votes you can put in, after all if you think its THAT good then why not use all your votes
